The Dark Money Game

duotone's founder and acclaimed film composer Peter Nashel crafted the score for Alex Gibney's new set of documentaries on HBO, collectively titled: "The Dark Money Game". The documentaries explore the shadowy world of untraceable political spending fifteen years after the Supreme Court's Citizens United decision, revealing how dark money from wealthy donors and corporations flows through nonprofits and super PACs to influence American politics.

Nashel brought both his cinematic and jazz sensibilities to the project, continuing his longstanding collaboration with Oscar-winning director Gibney that includes previous work on "Totally Under Control" and "The Crime of the Century." He again teamed up with duotoner and accomplished composer himself, Brian Deming, to create a distinctive sonic landscape featuring angular piano voicings, sinuous trumpet lines, and atmospheric modular synths.

Rather than working with pre-arranged compositions, Nashel and Deming employed an innovative approach... bringing a handpicked jazz quartet into the studio specifically to improvise, resulting in music that doesn't merely accompany the narrative but actively conspires with it. This approach yields a score that whispers the unease of a system designed to conceal, perfectly complementing the docs.

The two documentaries (individually named "Ohio Confidential" and "Wealth of the Wicked") will premiere on April 15th and April 16th respectively on HBO.
